Best hair care tips

It is not just your skin that requires extra protection, your hair too requires that extra dose of nourishment as the mercury rises. With the help of these tips, take the best care of your hair!

■ Regular hair wash: Pollution and dust combined with sweat tend to accumulate on the scalp, which results in hair fall. Choose a shampoo that removes the right amount of oil from your scalp. Wash your hair frequently with a mild shampoo and a good conditioner to stop your hair from splitting and drying out.

■ Deep conditioning: The summer heat can wreak havoc with your hair and can leave it dull and dry. Conditioning becomes imperative in this scenario. Oil your hair regularly to revitalize dull and dry strands of hair. A little oil on the scalp helps stimulate blood flow and relieves stress. You can also apply some Shea butter on the strands for a lustrous post-wash look. An easy hack for making an effective conditioner at home is rinsing your hair with diluted apple cider vinegar.

■ Eat and drink right: Your diet determines the growth of your hair. So, it is advisable to consume healthy foods such as green leafy vegetables, salads and fresh fruits to improve the condition of your hair in the summer. Low water intake in this season can cause dehydration. This will not only damage your skin but will also lead to hair loss and dry scalp. Drink plenty of water and eat the right food to promote hair growth.

■ Use a scarf: It is essential to cover your head with a cotton scarf to protect your tresses from the scorching heat. This will also save your tresses from dust, pollution and wind.

■ Trim it or keep it short: To escape from the sweltering heat and humid climate, it is advisable to keep your hair short or trim them. Have your hair trimmed once a month to remove any dry or split ends that may have occurred in the summer. Cutting your tresses short means low maintenance. This will keep your hair thicker, too.

Tips to oil hair the right way by Doctor Bhargava

hair

The famous Indian ‘champi’ or head massage is a practice passed on from generations, and many of us still make it a weekly ritual to oil our hair before we wash it. Oiling the hair is believed to prevent hair from premature greying, strengthen its roots and massaging the pressure points also relieves stress. But one needs to know how to oil hair the right way to get its benefits.
  • There is no particular technique to apply oil. However, it is important to understand certain points to have optimum results:
  • The oil should be lukewarm by slightly heating it.
  • Dip fingers in the oil. Make a partition of your hair with your hand and apply the oil to the scalp.
  • Do not just pour oil on the head. Use oil in adequate quantity only. Using too much oil will mean you’ll need to use more shampoo. Gently massage the scalp with your fingertips.
  • Never rub your hair with your palms as it can break. Massaging is essential as it improves blood circulation in your scalp area. You should massage your hair for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Leave the oil in your hair overnight. You can wash it off the next morning. However, it is always better to leave the oil on the scalp for a longer period but not more than 24 hours as then it’ll start attracting dirt, in turn it’ll make the hair weak. Are you making these ten haircare and skincare mistakes?
  • Steaming your hair with a hot towel after oiling is excellent as it helps hair to absorb the oil. Just wrap a warm towel around it for 10 minutes. Make sure that the towel is not too hot as too much heat can harm the hair shaft. Here are five wonders of steaming for your hair and skin.
  • Oil at least once a week, but you can go ahead and do it more frequently.
Oils for Different Types of Hair

Normal Hair: This type of hair is neither greasy nor dry. It holds its style and shine. He recommends arnica, almond and Tulsi amla oils for the normal hair type.

Dry Hair: This type of hair is very dull, tangles easily and is prone to split-ends. The oil required for this purpose is the one that stimulates the sebaceous glands in the scalp to produce more oil. Use almond, jojoba, coconut, sesame, mustard, cocoa butter oils for the dry hair type.

Oily Hair: This type of hair looks greasy which is generally because of over production of sebum by the sebaceous glands. So the kind of oil that is required should be able to restore the sebaceous glands to normal. Apply olive, sesame, and jojoba oils if your hair is of this type.

Dandruff Hair: Essential oils can be very effective in minimizing or halting this problem. The best essential oil for treating dandruff is tea-tree oil. You could also try out bhringaraj oil, know how it increases hair growth here.

You should avoid oiling of hair if the climate is humid. Also avoid oiling when your skin texture is oily as the scalp would produce oil naturally. If you work outdoors for long hours, then do not keep the hair oily as it will attract dust and cause hair fall.

So oiling of hair and scalp is an essential activity that involves the selection of right hair oil and correct way of application. Other than taking care of hair, oiling hair serves certain ancillary purposes too. It additionally contributes to relaxation, curing headache and migraine by giving relaxation. Know easy ways to deal with a headache, here.

It is helpful only if you learn how and when to use it. Oil is not the only thing that helps in hair growth. It certainly improves blood circulation and relaxes the mind, but there are other important reasons and methods to promote hair growth.

Oiling tips
After oiling your hair, wrap a hot, wet towel around it for 2 to 3 minutes to get it absorbed in the scalp. But always check the temperature of the towel. Too much heat is harmful to your hair.

If you already have oily hair, do not massage your hair with more oil.

Mix Vitamin E in any oil and massage. It’s superb for hair.

Hair Care Secrets
If an itchy scalp is the bane of your existence, make sure not to pick up just any anti-dandruff shampoo. Use a medicated shampoo once a week and try a cleansing shampoo for the washes in between.
Doctor Bhargava Recommends: Dead Sea Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, it’s medicated and will keep those flakes at bay!

2. Avoid Washing Your Hair Everyday

Hair Care Secrets

Washing your hair every day should be avoided as shampoo can strip your hair of its natural oils and lead to dryness as well as zap your expensive colour. You can rinse your hair out everyday with just cold water or if you need to wash your hair everyday, go in for a baby or a herbal shampoo, they have a low PH value and will be more gentle on your locks.
Doctor Bhargava Recommends: Renref AntiLice Shampoo

3. Change Your Shampoo Up

Hair Care Secrets

If you’ve been using the same shampoo for a long time now, chances are that your hair has gotten “used to” it and can start over producing oil like crazy. Professionals advice you to alternate between a couple of shampoos that suit your hair so your head doesn’t get complacent.

4. Give The Vinegar Rinse a Try

Hair Care Secrets

We all know that eggs are amazing for your strands, but since no body wants to smell like breakfast, try the vinegar rinse instead. After you’ve shampooed and washed out your conditioner, don’t step out of the shower just yet. Pour a glass of apple cider vinegar over your hair and rinse out. This will add a gorgeous shine and softness to your locks.

5. Grandma Was Right!

Hair Care Secrets
Get back to those school-time champi days. Go heavy on the coconut oil or olive oil or any oil you have at hand. They all work wonders as deep, moisturizing conditioners, and at least one of them can be found in most kitchens. Start at the ends and move up the hair shaft, braid your hair and let it soak in for an hour or more before washing it out. Afterwards your hair will feel soft, silky and nourished.
Doctor Bhargava Tip: Keep the oil in for a minimum of an hour before your wash it out.

6. Go Easy On The Hot Tools

Hair Care Secrets
Your flat iron and blow-dryer may give you smooth locks temporarily, but are only going to cause your strands to get super dry and rough in the long-run. Try and cutdown using these damaging tools and when you do go with the lowest heat setting possible. It’s fine to embrace your natural waves, curls and kinks sometimes, you might just fall in love with your unruly affair!

7. Revive Those Curls

Hair Care Secrets

If you feel like yours curls are too limp and flat instead of wild and bouncy, use dry shampoo to revive them. Simply spritz your hair and run your fingers through as if you were pulling it up into a ponytail.
Doctor Bhargava Recommends: Arnica Shampoo.

8. Go For Natural Bristles

Hair Care Secrets Always opt for a natural-bristle brush, it is softer and more flexible, which means less damage to your hair.
Doctor Bhargava Recommends: DIVO Asanti Natural Bristle Round Hair Brush

9. Cold Water Can Fight Frizz

Hair Care Secrets
After conditioning, add a shot of cool water to your mane before stepping out of the shower. This helps seal your hair cuticles, making it harder for moisture to enter the hair follicle, which can cause frizz. Cold water also brings a healthy shine to your hair.

10. Make Your Highlights Last Longer

Hair Care Secrets

Instead of spending all that moolah on expensive salon trips to color it again, try a DIY highlight enhancer, which revives color with natural tints. Rinse with 2 cups of cool black coffee over damp hair in the shower; leave on for 10 minutes, then shampoo. This will condition the hair as well.
